Americans Still Obese Despite Increased Exercise

According to a survey released this week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 35 percent of Americans now claim to engage in regular physical activity. That's compared to 32 percent in 2008.

Sounds like encouraging news, considering health experts recommend getting daily exercise to keep weight off and prevent heart disease, diabetes and cancer. But, not so fast. That same survey shows the rate of obesity is still at an all time high, frozen at 28 percent.

So, why is increased activity not changing the number of Americans struggling with their weight? According to the experts, the answer is simple; It's not just about working out. In fact, there are three specific components to fighting obesity.

"There's really about three factors that will help burn off fat quicker. One is of course diet, really controlling the portions that you have at one time. The other is cardio, and that is exercising for 20 to 30 to 40 minutes in a row. Then the third is resistance exercise or weight training," said Fuse Fitness Trainer Dr. Mike Trexler.
And of those three Dr. Trexler says diet is the most important.

"I think people think they can overcome poor eating habits by working out. They'll come in and work out for 30 minutes and think that's going to cure a whole day of bad eating," said Trexler.

Fuse Fitness Trainer Amy Blue says healthy eating is actually 90 percent of the battle.

"The reason people aren't losing weight is because even if they're exercising hard, if they're just replacing the calories that they burned here with more calories that they add into their diet, then it doesn't end up going anywhere for them...Everything you put into your mouth is either moving you toward your goal or away from your goal," said Blue.

According to the CDC survey, the rate of smoking also remains stagnant. Despite an increase in physical activity, 21 percent of Americans still smoke tobacco.
